In response to the far-reaching effects of the COVID-19 virus and related societal shutdown, the Internet Archive (IA) has built what it calls a “National Emergency Library” (NEL). In a nutshell, the IA has taken its existing “Open Library” project and made it far more expansive. For the duration of the national emergency, there will be no limitations on the number of copies of a given electronic book that can be checked out from the Library at one time. The NEL announcement was understandably met with a wide range of reactions, both positive and negative.
